Things to do in Bangkok
Bangkok's most famous and sacred site is the Grand Palace of Bangkok, a huge complex that dates back to 1782 and was once the home of the Thai King. It also contains the dazzling Wat Phra Kaew Temple, home to the Emerald Buddha.
- Buddhas are a running theme here in Thailand: catch a glimpse of the Golden Buddha, the world's largest solid gold statue, in Wat Traimit, and be sure to visit Wat Pho to see the world's largest image of a reclining Buddha.
- What, there's even more temples? Your trip to Bangkok won't be complete without seeing Wat Arun, or the Temple of the Dawn, which boasts a wonderful riverside location.
- Immortalised in Alex Garland's The Beach, Khao San Road is synonymous with backpackers in Bangkok. But it's worth a visit even if you're not staying here, just to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of clubs, bars, market stalls and travelling lifestyles.
- Just next to Khao San is Soi Rambuttri, a quieter and less developed area that often described as a slice of "Bangkok of old". Relax at one of its inviting restaurants, in less frenetic surroundings than offered by its neighbour.
- Bangkok used to be known as the "Venice of the East". But although many of its khlongs (canals) have been built over, you can still take scenic boat rides along its waterways.
- The Jim Thompson House is a fascinating attraction. Thompson was an American businessmen (and wartime spy) who helped revitalise the Thai silk industry, but mysterious disappeared in the 1960s while visiting Malaysia.
- If you think Bangkok is busy in the day, just wait until after dark. Its nightlife is among the world's most celebrated and you'll find pulsing clubs and rooftop bars across the city. Skybar is a particular favourite with visitors.
- Travelling with children? Treat them to a day out at Siam Park City, where you'll find a fantastic amusement park and an invigorating water park.
- Escape from the city on a day trip to nearby beaches. The beaches at Ko Samut and Hua Hin are fantastic and within easy reach of Bangkok.
Shopping in Bangkok
Bangkok is a haven for shoppers, and not just for tourists looking for a bargain. People from neighbouring countries flock to Bangkok for a long weekend of shopping too.
Siam Square
Start your shopping trip in the Siam Square district, where you'll find the huge MBK shopping centre, the bustling stores of Ratchaprasong and upscale Emporium shopping mall on Sukhumvit Road.
Markets
Grab a bargain at one of Bangkok's famous markets. The huge Chatuchak Weekend Market is one of the world's largest of its kind, and the floating markets of Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa offer a lovely taste of the Bangkok of yesteryear.
Tailored clothes
If you've got time, be sure to visit a tailor in Bangkok. You can pick up a tailor-made suit here for a fraction of the price a ready-made one would cost you in the UK. But make sure you do your research and choose a well-regarded tailor, to ensure quality control.
Eating in Bangkok
Whether you're dining in a fancy restaurant or sampling street food from local stalls, every dish is a delight in Bangkok.
Thai classics
Make sure you have your fill of classic Thai dishes, like tom yum goong (hot and spicy prawn soup), pad thai (fried noodles), massaman curry and som tam (spicy green papaya salad). And if you're feeling brave, head to Khao San Road to try some deep fried insects with soy sauce.
Food tours
Eating in Bangkok can be overwhelming. If you're not sure where to start, begin your journey with a Bangkok food tour for a handy introduction to the many tastes of the city.
Insider's Tips
Call the tourist police on 1155 in the event of an emergency. For general emergency calls to the police, dial 191. Ambulance and rescue services can be reached on 1554 and the fire brigade is on 199.
UK citizens can travel for up to 30 days in Thailand without a visa. If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, you will need permission to extend your trip.
Bangkok enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures generally ranging between 20 and 35 degrees year-round. However, avoid visiting during the wet season, which lasts from May to October.
In the Grand Palace, men and women must observe a strict dress code, ensuring that legs, shoulders and feet are covered.
Getting there from Bangkok Airport
Rail Link
The most popular way to get from Bangkok airport to the city centre is the Rail Link. Take the Express route from Suvarnabhumi Airport direct to Makkasan in 15 minutes, or opt for the City Line with stops at six stations between Suvarnabhumi and Phyathai Station and takes 30 minutes. See the Rail Link website for further details.
By bus
Take the free shuttle from the airport to the Public Transportation Centre to catch buses into Bangkok. Buses operate from Suvarnabhumi airport to different districts in Bangkok, as well as to Don Muang Airport. The old backpacker bus service to Khao San Road no longer runs.
By taxi
Bangkok airport taxis can be found outside the arrivals hall. Find out more about Bangkok airport taxis online.
