1. Start your visit by exploring the buildings and attractions that make up Dubai's famous skyline. Take the lift up to the observation deck at the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest structure, or pop into the Burj Al-Arab, Dubai's famous 'seven-star' hotel. First held in 1996, the Dubai Shopping Festival usually takes place from January to February every year. Shops across the city cut their prices during the festival, so it's a great time to pick up a bargain. 

Gold souk

This historic market does well to outshine even the ritziest hotels in Dubai. Stall after stall is piled high with gold jewellery, most of it 22 carat. Prepare to haggle with vendors and make sure you know the price of gold before visiting.

Thanks to its international population, travellers can pick and choose from a broad range of cuisines across the city. 

What to eat in Dubai

For down-to-earth street food, head to Al Dhiyafah Road. Here, you'll find vendors selling everything from tantalising curries and biriyanis to fragrant Lebanese and Iranian dishes. The smells of succulent lamb and mouth-watering spices and herbs fill the air. 

Restaurants

At the other end of the spectrum are Dubai's high end dining options. Usually, you'll find these in hotels, which offer a medley of chic French, Asian, Modern Arabic and Italian eateries and are usually allowed to serve alcohol. In an emergency, call 999 for the police or ambulance services. For the fire brigade, call 997. The coast guard can be reached on 996. 

UK citizens receive a 30-day Dubai tourist visa free of charge when they land at the airport. This is also the case for US citizens and most EU nationalities but check in advance to see if you qualify. 

Dubai's currency is the Emirati Diram. ATMs are available across the city and credit cards are widely accepted. But make sure you keep your passport on you, in case you need further ID when using your card.

Taxis are the most common way to get from Dubai Airport to the city. Look out for the distinctive cream-coloured taxis at the airport or ask your hotel to book one for you in advance.

Using public transport
