Things to do in Lisbon 

1. One of Lisbon's most prized districts is Belem, a treasure trove of historic buildings and monuments. Here's, you'll discover the iconic Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery, where explorer Vasco da Gama is buried.
2. Belem is far from Lisbon's only district of note. Spend your first day wandering around the city and explore the main square of Rossio, the central area of Baixa and the Moorish streets of Alfama.
3. In Alfama, you'll find St George's Castle (Castelo de São Jorge in Portuguese). This fortification is a millenium old - climb up to its battlements for birds-eye views over Lisbon.
4. Take a break from history in the modern Parque des Nacoes district. This area received a facelift for the Expo '98 World Exhibition and today it's home to sights like the Lisbon Aquarium, the Vasco de Gama Tower and several hotels.
5. You'll need a few days to see all of Lisbon's excellent museums. But if you're short on time, the Museu do Azulejo, a stunning tile collection housed in the Madre de Deus Convent, is a must-see, as is the hugely important Maritime Museum.
6. Art fans shouldn't miss the Bernardo Museum in Belem, a huge modern art collection that includes works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro.
7. There are many beautiful churches in Lisbon, but Sao Roque Church stands out. This baroque building is one of the world's earliest Jesuit churches and, when it was constructed in the 16th century, was among the most expensive churches ever built.
8. For an alternative way to see the city, hop onto Tram 28. This old-style tram runs through the old town, passing through Alfama, Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto. Be sure to take a ride on one of Lisbon's historic funiculars too.
9. Want to enjoy the city's beautiful weather by the sea? Take a train to the Estoril coast where you'll find some of the best beaches within a stone's throw of Lisbon.
10. Lisbon comes alive after dark, with some of the best nightlife in Europe. Head to Bairro Alto to sip local wine and cocktails in the city's trendiest bars, or party the night away on a chic rooftop bar with a riverfront view. 

Shopping in Lisbon

Lisbon has a great shopping scene, with shops closed in the afternoon for siesta but usually open until 10pm. If you plan to do a lot of shopping in the city, buying a Lisboa Shopping Card could save you money.

What to buy

Don't leave Portugal without buying some speciality local items. Ceramics and soaps are typically Portuguese souvenirs, and the country's place as a world-leading cork producer means that you can  find a variety of fashionable goods made with cork. 

Thieves Market

The Feira da Ladra – known as the flea market or thieves market – is held every Saturday and Tuesday  in Alfama. It's a great place to look at antiques, furniture and handmade goods.

As Portugal's capital city, Lisbon is the ideal place to sample traditional dishes and modern takes on local food. 

Portuguese food and drink

Portuguese cuisine is dominated by fish and seafood – grilled sardines and bacalhau (dried salted cod) are particularly loved – but pork is also popular. Portuguese wine is also supremely underrated the world over, but thankfully in abundance here so don't miss the local Moscatel and Port wines.

For restaurants serving the best traditional Portuguese cuisine, head to the districts of Chiado or Bairro Alto. But remember, if waiters bring you starters like bread, cheese and olives, you will be charged so politely refuse these dishes if you don't want them.

The Lisbon Airport bus leaves every 20 minutes from 7am to 9pm and takes passengers to Lisbon city centre.
