Things to do in Delhi 

1. Dive into Delhi's Mughal history with a visit to the enchanting Red Fort. This most famous of Mughal monuments is a huge sandstone complex that dates back to the 17th century and is lit up by a light and sound show on most nights.
2. Just opposite the Red Fort is the Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque. Climb up its tall minaret for excellent views over the city.
3. One of India's most famous landmarks, the Qutub Minar – a minaret measuring over 70m – was supposedly the tallest building in the world in medieval times, and its neighbouring mosque was Delhi's first. Despite being a very popular attraction, it's still a serene and peaceful spot.
4. Another top Delhi attraction, Humayun's Tomb is said to have been the inspiration behind the Taj Mahal. Built to house the remains of Emperor Humayun in the 16th century, the resemblance between the two buildings is quite stark.
5. Take a tour of Delhi's many temples to see more of this city's diverse religious make-up. The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Sikh temple is free and renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, while the modern Akshardham temple complex and the serene Bahá'í Lotus Temple are notable for their stunning architecture.
6. To learn more about India's ancient history, visit the National Museum in Janpath, while the National Railway Museum in Chanakyapuri is full of fascinating details about this hugely important infrastructure.

For cheap clothes, Sarojini Nagar is your best bet, while Paharganj and the weekly craft fair at Dilli Haar are great places to buy souvenirs. The Delhi Metro is a quick and cheap way of getting around, but can be very crowded. To avoid the throngs, hop in a taxi instead. 

Delhi is prone to extreme temperatures, sometimes exceeding 40 degrees Celsius between April and June. Tourists should visit between October and March, though temperatures can hover as low as seven degrees in December and January. 

Getting from Delhi Airport

Public transport.

The Delhi Metro connects Terminal 3 at Delhi Airport with the city centre, with services running between 05.15 and 23.35. Buses to and from the airport stop opposite the Centaur Hotel, but can be extremely crowded. 

By taxi or airport transfer

Taxis are available outside the terminal buildings 24-hours a day. Alternatively, you may be able to arrange a Delhi airport transfer with your hotel in advance.
