Things to do in Sydney
- Perhaps you glimpsed it when you flew into the city, but there's nothing like seeing the Sydney Harbour Bridge up close. Walk across it, take a cruise underneath it or – if you're feeling very brave – climb over it.
- One of the world's most recognisable landmarks, the Sydney Opera House celebrated its 40th birthday in 2013. Take a tour of this iconic building or plan ahead and book tickets for a performance.
- A hotspot for backpackers, Bondi Beach is Australia's most famous stretch of coastline and the closest to Sydney city centre. Take a dip in the bay or, better yet, rent a surfboard for the occasion.
- The centre of tourist life in Sydney, Darling Harbour is the best spot in the city for harbour-side wining and dining. For a break form the hustle and bustle, pop into the tranquil Chinese Garden of Friendship.
- Travelling with children? They'll spot the iconic Ferris Wheel of Luna Park a mile off. This amusement park is a local institution and a must for families in the city.
- You might be in the middle of the city, but there's animals all around. Don't miss great attractions like Sydney Aquarium, the Koala Sanctuary and Sydney Zoo to learn more about this country's unique wildlife.
- One of the oldest of its kind in the world, the Royal National Park is an hour's drive from Sydney. Look out for kangaroos and wallabies, as well as Aboriginal rock carvings – an important part of Australian heritage.
- Head indoors to the Australian Museum. Established more than 200 years ago, it's the country's oldest museum. Elsewhere, The Powerhouse Museum boasts a variety of futuristic exhibits, while Elizabeth Farm sheds light on Australia's colonial history.
- Sports fans rejoice: the Sydney Olympic Park – used for the 2000 Olympic Games – is a thriving area that's ripe for exploration. You can even rent accommodation here.
- Take a breather at the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens and appreciate the wonder that is the city of Sydney. It's the ideal place to see Sydney's spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks display too, but tickets sell out fast.
